Leonie Dobbins

A bit about myself:  I am from South Africa....born and raised there.  My family has been there for several generations.  I grew up near the Indian Ocean in KwaZulu-Natal.  For the last 2 years of school I was at a German Lutheran boarding school.  Then I went to the University of Natal in Durban and graduated with a B.A. in languages.  I met Roy there and we married and moved inland to Pretoria, where I did a post-grad diploma to teach high school. After a few years of that we had two daughters and I stayed home, giving  language lessons at home to various foreigners!

We came to the USA in 1984 for a year, when Roy was on a sabbatical leave from the University where he was a lecturer in Computer Science.  Then in 1987 we came back to the USA to Columbia, Maryland where Roy worked at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab.

After some time we moved to Arizona.  Yay!!!  We love it here.... hiking, camping, picnics.

We lived in Gisela  (just outside Payson) for about 18 years then moved into Payson .  Much of that time I was the editor of the Gisela Gazette, a monthly news magazine.  I really enjoyed that.  I also had a bakery in Payson for a number of years..... The Red Elephant Bakery Cafe.  I loved doing Afternoon Tea! I also wrote some pieces for the Rim Country Gazette and the Payson Bugle.  (Both not in print now)    Then in 2008 when the economy tanked, I had to close the Red Elephant.  I worked at the Casino, in the bakery, and then at the Payson Senior Center cooking for the Meals on Wheels program.  I still help there occasionally.  Through-out all these years I write and enjoy being in a writing group.  I also really love writing letters!
